This is the first time that the Nobel Peace Prize has rewarded freedom of the press.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday, October 8 to two journalists, the Filipino Maria Ressa and the Russian Dimitri Muratov.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised “

 their courageous fight for freedom of expression 

” in their respective countries.

The chairperson of the Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, in Oslo declared that Maria Ressa and Dimitri Muratov were " 

the representatives of all journalists who defend this ideal in a world where democracy and press freedom face conditions increasingly unfavorable

 ”.

In its latest report, the NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) indicated that the exercise of journalism is “ 

seriously hampered

 ” in 73 of the 180 states listed in its classification and “

 restricted 

” in 59 others.
