08 October 2021The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the two journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov "for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace".

Maria Ressa

, a Filipino citizen who is a naturalized American, is the co-founder of the news site Rappler, known for her inquiries into the work of the government of President Rodrigo Duterte, especially in relation to the so-called 'war on drugs'. She was awarded for "using freedom of expression to expose the abuse of power, the use of violence and growing authoritarianism" in the Philippines. Several times arrested under the Duterte administration, she was chosen by Time Magazine as 'Person of the Year 2018'. The Rappler website, a thorn in the side of the Duterte government, has been prosecuted by the judiciary on several counts ranging from tax evasion to violation of media ownership law.

Muratov

, editor-in-chief of the Russian investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the newspaper for which the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, killed in 2006, wrote, fought for the independence and rights of journalists.

The Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov is a "prize for freedom of the press in environments hostile to independent journalism".

This is the comment of Riccardo Noury, spokesperson for Amnesty International Italia.

102 Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded since 1901.

Since then 17 women have received the Nobel Peace Prize, while 25 organizations have been awarded.

In history there was also a winner who refused recognition, the Vietnamese Le Duc Tho, in 1973.
