Europe Czech Prime Minister, dotted with Pandora Papers, seeks re-election
The government party Alliance of Discontented Citizens (ANO), of Prime Minister Andrej Babis, has won the legislative elections in the Czech Republic, despite the shadow of capital flight revealed by the so-called Pandora papers that once again put the focus on this politician and businessman
with the second largest fortune in the country.
With 92% of the votes counted,
the ANO party gets 29.79%
of the support or the equivalent of 75 of the 200 seats that make up Parliament.
Babis, however, is far from the absolute majority, so
a coalition partner will have to be found to overcome the 103 seats
now held by the two center-right opposition alliances.
Behind Babis's party is the SPOLU coalition led by the Civic Democratic Party (26.79%), while the Pirates-Mayors and Independents coalition obtained 15.04% of votes.
The far-right party Libertad y Democracia Directa (SPD) is the fourth most voted proposal with 9.92%.
The rest of the formations do not reach the minimum 5% to obtain
representation.
With these data, Babis's party will have to agree to continue in power with the added complication that its until now coalition partner,
the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), has remained at 4.75%
of support and it is therefore outside Parliament.
The scrutiny is in line with the demographic projections of the last few days, both regarding the departure of the CSSD from Parliament, and the little effect that the appearance of Babis in the Pandora roles has had on the electorate.
