08 October 2021The still provisional toll of the explosion that hit a Shiite mosque in the province of Kunduz, in northern Afghanistan, is at least 15 dead and 90 injured.

This was reported by Doctors Without Borders.



The detonation occurred during Friday prayers.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Shiite mosque was the target and that a "large number" of faithful were killed or injured.



He also added that the Taliban special forces have arrived and are investigating the facts.



The explosion was confirmed by the spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Qari Sayed Khosti, to AFP, without giving further details.

The first videos that circulated on Twitter show bodies lying on the mosque floor and several bloodstains scattered on the ground.



The cause of the explosion is still unclear.

No group has yet claimed responsibility.
