The Nobel Peace Prize has just announced that Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in defending press freedoms.

In its 120-year history, the Nobel Peace Prize has never rewarded independent journalism, which allows decision-makers to be held accountable and helps eliminate misinformation circulated privately on social networks.

"Accurate reports that help us stay informed and get an idea of current events in real time are essential to good public debate and democratic institutions," said Peace Research Institute Director Henrik Urdahl.

The award, which consists of a certificate and a check of ten million crowns (980,000 euros), is traditionally presented on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896).

After the Peace Prize, which is the only one awarded in the Norwegian capital, the Nobel season will return to Stockholm to award the Economics Prize on Monday.
