20 emus, flightless birds native to Australia, it is unknown how they managed to escape from a tourist village in Kumamoto prefecture in southwestern Japan.

It was local residents who informed the Kikuchi City Police that exotic birds were roaming nearby.

In the course of the chase 11 birds were captured, while the others are still wanted.

Police officials urged residents not to approach the birds.

Although they are mostly peaceful and cannot fly, they are capable of running at 50 kilometers per hour and are known to attack when threatened, dealing blows with the claws of their powerful three-toed legs.
