"The whole body of Qiongzhu is treasure. Bamboo shoots can be eaten, and the bamboo stalks can be made into canes, handicrafts, furniture..." When it comes to Qiongzhu, Dong Wenyuan always has endless topics.

Under his promotion, this rare bamboo species unique to China, which is only distributed in the narrow strip of Jinsha River along the two provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan, has recovered to more than 400,000 mu after 30 years of development, and has become a famous species in Daguan County, Yunnan Province. Get rich bamboo".

He was therefore called "Professor Qiongzhu".

The fate of "Professor Qiongzhu" and Qiongzhu began in 1993.

At that time, Dong Wenyuan was selected by Southwest Forestry University to serve as deputy head of science and technology in Daguan County.

The current situation of poverty and backwardness in the local area inspired him to use what he learned to combine local resources to find a way of development.

"I also considered tea, walnut and other industries at the beginning, but either the industry is limited by geographical coverage and the coverage is not large, or the income problem cannot be solved within a short period of time due to the limitation of growth years." Qiongzhu attracted his attention.

Dong Wenyuan recalled that the Qiongzhu he first discovered was "very low, only as thick as a finger".

But the bamboo shape is very unique, with bulging bamboo joints, breeze and thin bones.

After consulting the literature, it was found that as far back as the Han and Tang Dynasties, Qiongzhu canes and other Qiongzhu products were exported to India, Central Asia and even Europe.

However, although Qiongzhu has outstanding ecological and economic comparative advantages, the research on its biology, ecology and cultivation mechanism is still blank.

In order to find out the growth habits and distribution and development of Qiongzhu, Dong Wenyuan began a journey of looking for bamboo over the mountains and mountains.

"In the 1990s, it took several trains from Kunming to Daguan County, and it took two or three days to get there. Most of the further mountain villages could only be reached on foot." Dong Wenyuan said that at the beginning of the study, they had food and accommodation. On the mountain.

When you are hungry, you can roast potato to satisfy your hunger, and when you are thirsty, you can drink a mouthful of spring water.

In order to study the day and night growth of Qiongzhu, they stayed on the mountain all night and night.

From scratch, Dong Wenyuan successively presided over the completion of the China-Europe Biodiversity Conservation Project (ECBP) thematic "Research and Demonstration Base Construction of Natural Bamboo Forest Biodiversity Conservation Technology", and the National Forestry Public Welfare Industry Scientific Research Project "Protection and Degradation of Rare and Endangered Bamboo More than 10 projects such as "Research on Bamboo Forest Restoration Technology" have achieved achievements such as bamboo biological and ecological characteristics, biodiversity protection, improved species selection and bamboo seedling cultivation technology, degraded natural forest restoration and plantation ecological efficient cultivation technology, etc., published There are 31 papers, 8 national project identification results, 1 national invention patent, and 1 local standard, which fills the gap in the study of Qiongzhu, and establishes the theory and development of Qiongzhu resources protection, cultivation and industrialization in Daguan County. Practice basis.

Dong Wenyuan introduced that thanks to these research results, the survival rate of Qiong bamboo afforestation has increased from 40% in the past to 98%; the yield of bamboo shoots has increased from less than 50 kg/mu to 450 kg/mu, and the output value per mu is 4950 yuan; bamboo stalks The thickness has risen from less than 1 cm to more than 2 cm in the past, achieving a zero breakthrough in the production of craft bamboo.

Since 2017, Dong Wenyuan has led the team to provide technology and patents to Daguan County free of charge through various methods such as conference training, on-site training, and on-site guidance. The 92 training sessions were carried out, and 11,600 bamboo farmers were trained to select and cultivate the bamboo industry. There are 186 native talents, leaving a technical team that will never leave for the revitalization of the village; at the same time, it has guided 24 farmer cooperatives such as Xinxing Qiongzhu and Ruixing to carry out the technical work of raising seedlings and bamboo forests efficiently, and established 31 demonstration bases (sites), Covering an area of 8,600 mu, it will build 10 "Science and Technology Bamboo Gardens" and 4 "Science and Technology Institutes" led by new business entities, forming a network system for scientific and technological services and talent training, and gridding, organizing and sustaining the research results of Qiongzhu Sex is transformed into farmers’ ability to get rich.

With the implementation of scientific and technological achievements, the local bamboo industry has gradually developed.

Up to now, Daguan County has 208,300 mu of natural bamboo forests and 234,300 acres of artificial bamboo forests. The area of bamboo bamboo accounts for 60% of the global total bamboo resources.

In the past three years, the county has produced 37,400 tons of bamboo shoots, with a comprehensive output value of 1.1 billion yuan. The average annual income of bamboo farmers from picking bamboo shoots has been more than 8,000 yuan, with a maximum of more than 30,000 yuan.

Seeing Qiongzhu's development from a "rare plant" to a "one county, one industry" industry, Dong Wenyuan was deeply moved, "In less than 30 years, the area of Qiongzhu has increased by about four times. This is the power of science and technology, and the power of the whole people. "

In Dong Wenyuan's view, science and technology have further highlighted the ecological and economic value of Qiongzhu, and the participation of the whole people has allowed the species to be better protected.

The interaction between the two has "developed industry and protected biodiversity, which is of great significance".

Dong Wenyuan expects that in the future, there will be more rare and endangered species that will achieve a win-win situation between conservation and development.

He will also continue to devote himself to the research of biodiversity conservation.
