05 October 2021 The Belarusian Parliament approved a law suspending the readmission agreement for illegal immigrants who had entered the member states of the European Union from Belarus. It would be the answer to the EU sanctions against Belarus following the controversial re-election of President Lukascenko.

The readmission agreement was one of the conditions for simplifying the visa regime between Belarus and the European Union. According to the agreement, Belarus has agreed to take back not only illegal immigrants from third countries, but also its own citizens who did not have the qualifications to remain on the territory of the European Union. These are people who have illegally entered the territory of the European Union from the territory of Belarus.

In the meantime, the European Union has started the process of preparing the fifth package of sanctions against the Lukashenko regime.

One of the reasons for this decision, according to Brussels, was Minsk's use of migrants as a tool against the EU.

In recent months, Belarus has facilitated the illegal entry from Belarusian territory of immigrants from Africa and the Middle East to neighboring EU member states.

Hundreds of illegal immigrants have entered neighboring countries from Belarus in recent months, especially Poland and Lithuania.
