For many years, residual material containing, among other things, copper, zinc and lead has been temporarily stored at Rönnskär's industrial area.

These residues, together with future residues from production, will now pass through the newly built leaching plant for further metal extraction.

- Our focus is to take advantage of as much metal as possible from our raw materials and at the same time ensure the best available environmental and climate performance, says Daniel Peltonen, director of the Smelter business area, Boliden.

The remaining material will in turn be transported directly down to the underground repository, approximately 350 meters underground in the industrial area.

Rönnskär will thus be the only copper smelter in the world with a long-term landfill solution in the industrial area, the company believes.

The bill for the construction of the two facilities is just over SEK 1.4 billion.
