A large number of people were injured in connection with an explosion at an apartment building in central Gothenburg on Tuesday morning.

Lars Gunnar Wolmesjö, 64, lives in the house and woke up with a jerk.

- It sounded as if a huge bookshelf had collapsed in an apartment above me, so it might not have been the actual explosion, he says and continues:

- It may have been some kind of secondary effect before then the smoke spread and I heard that doors had been pushed in.

"Poured a bucket of water"

He saw no flames but understood that he could not stay in the apartment.

- I got to my feet, looked out and felt that there was a smell of fire smoke.

I poured a bucket of water for some reason, says Lars Gunnar, who soon steered the steps towards the front door.

But there it stopped.

In the stairwell he was met by dense, dark smoke.

He went out through the patio instead.

The yard was already full of people.

- There were a lot of people on the balconies above me.

A firefighter said they should stay on the balconies and not jump.

People were scared, a lot of smoke was pouring out of an apartment.

Lars Gunnar helped some to get down to the ground.

- They jumped from above me, it was one that hit a little grand.

I helped him down, but he still fought.

I helped a little boy down that road too, his dad held him in his arms and I grabbed him by the legs.

Unsure of the next step

Lars Gunnar says that despite the circumstances he is fine, but that he is not sure what to do.

- I'm just a little confused about what to do now.

Can I leave my apartment?

The firefighters are probably there, he says.
