Early on Monday, the SPD could be declared the largest party in the German election.
But with 25.7 percent of the vote, the majority was only 1.6 percentage points against the Christian Democrats' union CDU / CSU.
Both sides thus have a chance to form a government, depending in part on how the "royalists" liberal FDP and the Greens act.
The Green Party gets 14.8 percent and becomes the third largest party, while the FDP gets 11.5 percent of the vote.
SVT's Christoffer Wendick believes that Olaf Scholz (SPD) has far much more confidence than Armin Laschet.
- The SPD is the election winner, and it is a coalition that more and more Germans say they are positive about.
But the "kings" - FDP and the Greens - would also have a lot to gain from choosing the CDU, says Christoffer Wendick.
- Armin Laschet (CDU) has in principle promised heaven and earth, says Christoffer Wendick.
