To keep its citizens fit and healthy, Uzbekistan has put in place an original device in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Residents who walk more than 10,000 steps a day are rewarded.

The measure, announced last October as part of the "promotion of healthy living and sport in the face of the pandemic", was implemented in June.

Applications and platforms have been launched to track the steps of participants and "record their success", reports the Russian news site

Special prizes are awarded to "champions": 24 euros for the tallest walker in a city, 40 euros for the winner of a district and 80 euros for the national champion.

A total of 18,000 people took part in the initiative.

From June 10 to September 13, the Uzbek government paid its citizens 9.4 billion sums (750,000 euros) in total.

Since last November, the authorities have also forced civil servants to play sports once a week, and regularly organize competitions bringing together public administration employees and their families.
