Democratic Senator Chris Murphy expressed his deep concern about developments in Tunisia, and said that it is important for Washington to remain engaged when the country's system of governance is undermined, while 6 Tunisian organizations considered that the recent presidential order leads to the stabilization of the temporary situation.

Murphy explained - in an article - that he urged Tunisian President Kais Saied to expedite the end of the state of emergency, and to define a plan to return the country to the democratic path.

The prominent Democratic senator said President Saeed had broken his promise by declaring his intent to rule by decree, suspending parts of the constitution.

Murphy considered that the Tunisian president's steps contradict his commitment to protect and support democracy, and that Washington should reconsider the US security assistance package to Tunisia.

Judge orders detention of deputy

On another issue, lawyer Inas Harrath said that the first investigative judge of the military court in Tunis had ordered the imprisonment of the head of the Karama coalition, MP Seif El-Din Makhlouf, in what is known as the airport incident case.

Lawyer Harath added that the defense team, consisting of 30 lawyers, declined to plead and withdrew due to what she described as the sham trial.

6 Organizations Reject Monopoly

On the same Tunisian issue, a joint statement of 6 Tunisian organizations considered that the recent presidential order announced by President Kais Saied was received without a time limit, in a way that leads to the stabilization of the temporary situation.

The statement by the six organizations also criticized the issuance of the presidential order without any necessary consultation with any party.

The statement affirmed its rejection of any attempt to monopolize the perceptions of this stage, and to gather authorities without oversight mechanisms or setting deadlines for restoring the normal course of democracy.

The organizations - most notably the Syndicate of Journalists, the Association of Tunisian Judges, and the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights - stressed adherence to the independence of the judiciary, the need to respect the independence of media institutions and freedom of the press, and called for the speedy formation of a government in which everyone participates, according to the statement.
