• Steve Maia Caniço died in 2019, during the music festival in Nantes, following a police intervention on the banks of the Loire.

  • The fresco to pay homage to him, on the Quai Wilson, was regularly damaged.

  • A new fresco with a portrait of the young man is produced.

It is a new fresco that takes place along the Quai Wilson.

Exit the old painting in tribute to Steve Maia Caniço, who died during the Music Festival in Nantes, after falling into the Loire in a controversial police intervention.

This, carried out at the initiative of Nantes Révoltée, is currently replaced by a new fresco, as explained by the collective Ju'Steve: "It is a purely strategic choice and in agreement with the family", indicates t -he, explaining that the old fresco was deliberately covered with black paint.

"Too much hate and inconvenience"

The will of this collective is that this new fresco is "no longer degraded, nor politicized because it has suffered too much hatred and inconvenience."

A choice that is not unanimous on social networks.

Some supporters of the young man see in this gesture an oversight of police violence, the main theme of the first graffiti.

This does not prevent the collective from continuing its fight "for the truth".

As a reminder, the case is under investigation.

The judge in charge must shed light on possible faults that could have been committed, and leading to the death of young Steve Maia Caniço.

For the time being, two people have been indicted by the Rennes prosecutor's office: they are Commissioner Chassaing, in charge of police intervention on the evening of the events, and the former chief of staff of the prefect of the time, Johann Mougenot.

An investigation still in progress

The mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, was placed under the status of assisted witness, as was the former deputy for city security, Gilles Nicolas, as well as Thierry Palermo, departmental director of public security at the time of the tragedy.

Claude d'Harcourt, prefect at the time of the facts, should soon be heard by the examining magistrate.

"The end of the investigation could come at the end of the year 2021 or the beginning of 2022 before the Rennes public prosecutor's office is invited to take its requisitions (within three months after the end of the investigation) on a dismissal or not people implicated before the criminal court ”, specified the magistrate.
