The British opposition Labor Party adopted, today, Monday, a proposal that supports the use of sanctions against Israel, and calls for the immediate recognition of the state of Palestine.

The party condemned the ongoing Nakba in Palestine, Israel's military attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque, the deliberate displacement in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and the war on the Gaza Strip.

The majority of British Labor members voted on the proposal, which pledges to recognize a Palestinian state, if the party manages to form a government.

This came during the General Conference of the Labor Party, which welcomed the investigation of the International Criminal Court into the crimes of Israel.

In early March, the former Prosecutor of the Court, Fatou Bensouda, announced the launch of an investigation into the situation in Palestine.

The court will investigate the "suspect" that Israeli officials have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Labor party congress also endorsed a proposal calling for sanctions against Israel for its apartheid policies towards the Palestinians.

This party demands a move that stops the construction of settlements by the Israelis, cancels any annexation operations (of the territories) and ends the occupation of the West Bank and the siege of the Gaza Strip.

The Labor proposal referred to reports by human rights groups that conclusively concluded that Israel was practicing the crime of apartheid as defined by the United Nations.

The proposal was submitted by the youth section of the Labor Party, and it passed easily, Middle East confirmed, but the vote is not binding on the Labor leadership.

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that this decision is a strong message to the Israeli government that the world no longer accepts the continuation of this occupation, and that the world is moving towards adopting steps to besiege, isolate and punish the occupation.

Abbas added that such decisions are a message of hope for the Palestinian people and support for their rights, and confirm that this occupation, no matter how long it takes, its end is near.
