September 27, 2021: Hundreds of soldiers could be employed to deliver fuel at UK service stations as part of a contingency plan the government will look into today to address the haulage shortage and motorist assault on petrol pumps.

According to British media reports, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will meet the government today to examine the so-called "Operation Escalin", an emergency plan developed in recent years in the event of a no-deal Brexit, after BP reported that a third of its service stations have run out of the two main types of fuel, and that the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), which represents nearly 5,500 independent outlets, reported that 50% to 90% of its members reported being now dry.

In recent months, the lack of truckers has caused problems in various sectors, from supermarkets to fast food chains. In the last few days alone, it has also covered some fuel deliveries, sparking panic and long queues at service stations, although companies in the sector, including Shell, Exxon Mobile and Greenergy, have remarked in a joint note that the pressures on ' supply were caused by "temporary spikes in customer demand, not a national fuel shortage."

To address the shortage of hauliers, the government announced last Saturday that it was ready to issue temporary visas, until Christmas Eve, to 5,000 foreign tanker and truck drivers carrying food and 5,500 workers in the poultry sector.

In addition, the executive will send nearly a million letters to drivers holding a heavy vehicle license to encourage them to re-enter the sector.
