Europe is facing an unprecedented surge in gas prices, a situation which is putting certain economic sectors in difficulty and increasing household energy bills.

Prices have increased by more than 250% since January.

Several factors are involved: strong global demand linked to the economic recovery and low levels of European storage.

To lower prices, Russia could increase its exports to Europe, something it has not done so far.

Gazprom accused of market manipulation

A group of some 40 MEPs asked the European Commission in mid-September to investigate Gazprom.

They accuse it of cutting its gas supplies through Ukraine to push Germany to approve more quickly the entry into service of

the controversial

Nord Stream 2

gas pipeline

across the Baltic Sea which has just been completed.

But Gazprom has denied any manipulation of the market.

In the meantime,

energy prices are increasing

in Europe, especially in countries that depend on gas for the production of electricity.
