September 27, 2021 The Covid-19 pandemic caused the largest drop in life expectancy recorded in the most developed countries since World War II.

According to a study published today by the University of Oxford, conducted in 29 countries, including most of Europe, the United States and Chile, according to which in 2020 27 of these countries recorded reductions in life expectancy such as to wipe out years of progress.

In most countries, men experienced a greater decline in life expectancy than women: the most marked reduction was recorded in the United States, with a decrease of 2.2 years from 2019 levels, followed by that of men from Lithuania, equal to 1.7 years. "For Western European countries such as Spain, England and Wales, Italy and Belgium, among others, the last time such marked drops in life expectancy at birth in a single year had been observed was during the Second world war, "said José Manuel Aburto, co-author of the study. The scientist recalled that "it took an average of 5.6 years for these countries to recently achieve a one-year increase in life expectancy:progress wiped out in 2020 by Covid-19 ".
