September 27, 2021 "We are finally in a position to assume European leadership. We are facing considerable turbulence. But if we make the right choices, we will create the economic boom and for another thirty years the country will grow again. If we are wrong, because there is we wanted to plant the flag, we condemn the country to decline ". This was stated by the president of Confindustria, Carlo Bonomi, in his speech at the assembly of the Union of industrialists of the Province of Varese. "We have a historic opportunity. We have four major gaps in this country of gender, generation, territories and skills. Today we can have the opportunity to finally respond to these gaps," he added.

"We must push growth. Growth must be an obsession for this country". Today we are all happy with the 6% recovery - explained Bonomi - and we still have a way to go to return to the pre-pandemic and most likely we will reach the pre-pandemic at the end of 2022 and this means being four points of GDP under the 2008 ". Either" we are growing up or we do not have the resources to respond to the really important emergency debt "contracted and" in Europe they will not give us discounts because we should return from that debt ".

The reforms are "all at risk of implementation" as "each party has put its flag" then emphasized the president of Confindustria, explaining that precisely in this regard he launched the idea "of the pact, also shared by the president Dragons ". According to Bonomi, "there is no party that makes up the majority that says the same thing, if we don't find a minimum common denominator everyone goes their own way".

Minimum wage, positive table with the unions

In Italy it is not necessary to introduce a minimum wage but to act on the contracts of those sectors where the wage is too low, said the president of Confindustria. 'I see the hypothesis of a table between Confindustria and trade unions (on the minimum wage) in a very positive way', said Bonomi, recalling that 'we must never forget the genesis of why we talk about the minimum wage in Europe and why we want to introduce a regulation for those countries that have low national collective bargaining and against wage dumping '.

Bonomi explained that he believes that 'with us the minimum wages are already within the collective labor agreements and we do not hide the fact that there are some sectors where the wages are very low. Then it is right to intervene in these cases'. For the president of Confindustria, 'the way is to insert contracts for those sectors that are now lacking, also because if I look at what is the minimum wage we are talking about today, that is the 9 euro gross, and I take the collective agreement of metalworkers that what is taken as a reference, the third level, which is what is normally taken as a reference as a benchmark, is 11 euros. If I also look at the lowest level it is 10 euros. So we already have it,and the same unions these days say that this is not the way because the risk is that of the escape of companies from collective bargaining. Ita is an example of these days'.

"I expect the best from Draghi-unions meeting"

'I expect the best possible' from the meeting scheduled for today between the prime minister, Mario Draghi, and the trade unions. 'I hope there is the desire to build', comments the President of Confindustria. 'If we want to put the dots on the and divide, we take a moment but the country today asks us more, it asks us to sit at a table, to confront each other in a hard, strong way, but to come out with solutions for the country', he said. Bonomi continued, who, when asked whether the reaction of the trade unions to the proposed pact for Italy was not a bit cold, replied not to think so: 'No, I am positive in this, it is obvious that there is time for mature, make reflections'. The president of Confindustria also said 'very happy that the prime minister understood the spirit with which we did not launch this pact, he even put his heart over the obstacle and called us all to a national responsibility. The passage in the assembly was: "no one can be called out", I do not call out, I sit at that table and I can discuss everything '.

"You can no longer die while going to work"

And on the scourge of deaths from work, Bonomi underlined: "I made a proposal, the first one which was to talk about safety in the workplace, I believe that we have not hidden: you can die today by going to work ". "I made a proposal - he added - because I consider it appropriate to intervene ex ante and not ex post, because I don't want more accidents in the workplace. I made a concrete proposal, we can start from that or we can start from what they think they put on the table , but let's do it, let's go ".

"Transitions are worrying, governance is needed"

On the issue of environmental, ecological and digital transitions "we are very concerned", Bonomi said, stressing that on the energy transition "we need to understand if there is a global governance or if everyone is going their own way?".

With regard to transitions, "I don't hear the economic and social cost of making choices that have a strong impact on businesses but also on hundreds of thousands of workers," he added.
