New York delivery men have their rights defended by New York City.

The city's city council voted in favor of a bill initiated by Los Deliveristas Unidos, a popular coalition of thousands of immigrant delivery men from New York.

This law guarantees delivery people access to restrooms in restaurants where they go to collect food or drink,

Delivery drivers are considered self-employed.

Until then, they had nowhere to urinate during their working hours.

Restaurants sometimes refused them the use of their toilets, being neither customers nor employees.

Consequence: these workers often relieved themselves in bushes, bottles and bags.

A series of laws to protect delivery drivers

New York is one of the largest food delivery markets in the United States.

“We all work with multiple apps.

Each works differently, but they are the same in that they all try to make a profit without offering protections to the workers, ”said

Vice

Gustavo Ajche, delivery driver and member of Deliveristas Unidos.

In addition to this law on access to toilets, several other bills have been adopted, with the aim of protecting and improving the conditions of self-employed workers.

In New York, for example, a minimum wage per trip is now guaranteed.

Limits on delivery distances have been set and other mechanisms must be put in place to ensure full payment of tips to delivery people.

Bill de Blasio, the mayor of the city, as well as the delivery application GrubHub, also supported the project led by Los Deliveristas Unidos.
