Five Palestinian militants were killed in a raid by the Israeli army in the West Bank.

The Israeli media reported on Sunday, citing the army, that there were exchanges of fire during the broad-based operation against members of the Islamist Hamas organization.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that three Palestinians had died northwest of Jerusalem and two others near the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke of a deployment of the security forces against "Hamas terrorists who were about to carry out terrorist attacks". A spokesman for the ruling Hamas in the Gaza Strip spoke of "martyrs" whose deaths were the result of Israeli cooperation with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. "It is a continuation of the crimes against our people," he said. The Israeli military spokesman Ran Kochav said, according to the Times of Israel, they are prepared for the possibility that Hamas could respond to the incidents with rocket fire.

Israel had conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967, among others.

The Palestinians want the territories for a separate state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as the capital.

Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the US and the EU.

In May, the Israeli military fought against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip for 11 days.

Egypt eventually brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that went into effect on May 21.
