At least three people have been killed and more than 50 others have been injured in a train derailment in Montana, in the northwestern United States.

According to the New York Times (NYT), the 'Empire Builder' train belonging to Amtrak (similar to Korea's KORAIL) that connects Seattle and Chicago derailed near Joplin, Montana around 4 pm on the 25th (local time).

There were 141 passengers and 16 crew members on the train, an Amtrak spokesperson said.

The train consisted of 2 locomotives and 10 passenger cars, of which 8 were reported to have derailed.

Some carriages were found to have tipped over after derailing.

Amtrak said: "Three people were killed in the accident and there were reports of injuries."

"More than 50 people were injured," Montana's head of disaster and emergency services told The New York Times.

Photos were posted on social media and others showing passengers standing next to an overturned train and luggage scattered here and there.

Looking at the picture, it is assumed that the train derailment occurred on a straight section.

Joplin, where the accident occurred, is a small town with a population of about 200 near the Canadian border. Immediately after the accident, local residents rushed to the scene to help passengers, transported them to schools, etc. and provided them with water and food, the Associated Press reported. I did.

The cause of the train derailment is still unknown.

The U.S. Transportation Safety Board said it plans to send a 14-person investigative team to the scene to investigate the incident.
