Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the holding of the "summit of democracies" proposed by the United States would be a movement towards the split of the world community into "us" and "foes".

He suggested that the participants in this event will be determined by Washington, "arrogating to itself the right to determine the degree of compliance of a country with democratic standards."

“In fact, this initiative - quite in the spirit of the Cold War - proclaims a new ideological crusade against all dissent,” Lavrov said at a general political discussion of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

The head of the Russian foreign policy department recalled the words of the head of the White House, Joe Biden, that the United States does not want the division of the world into opposing blocs.

“In fact, the“ summit of democracies ”will become a step towards the split of the world community into“ us ”and“ foes, ”the minister concluded.

Recall that Biden announced the idea of a summit in support of democracy in August.

According to the American President, the United States intends to gather on a single platform the leaders of "various democratic countries of the world" in the framework of the "Summit in Support of Democracy."

The White House said in a statement that the virtual summit was to take place on December 9-10.

According to Biden, the event can "give a new impetus" to initiatives in three key areas, including protection from authoritarianism, fighting corruption and promoting human rights.

Note that Biden also promised to hold a "summit in support of democracy" in his campaign column for Foreign Affairs magazine.

In this material, he concluded that partnership with other states that "share the values and goals of the United States" is "the key to enhancing security and achieving greater success."

"Fraught with dangerous relapses of bloc politics"

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov also noted that the collective West is trying to translate discussions on key issues into convenient formats, thus removing those who have their own point of view from the process of developing global solutions.

In this regard, he mentioned the plans of Germany and France to form a "multilateralist alliance".

“Although it would seem, what other structure can be more multilateral than the UN?

However, Berlin and Paris considered that there were many "conservatives" in the UN who were holding back the efforts of the "vanguard".

They proclaimed the European Union as the ideal of “effective multilateralism,” all others were invited to be equal to it, ”Lavrov explained.

The minister warned that the imposition of a "rule-based order" instead of unconditional observance of international law is fraught with "dangerous relapses of bloc politics, the creation of dividing lines between a group of Western countries and other states."

In addition, during a press conference following his visit to New York for the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov announced the resumption of work on the preparations for the summit of the UN Security Council Five.

He recalled that earlier Vladimir Putin had come up with a corresponding initiative.

“In order for the great powers to feel their responsibility both to their peoples and to the rest of humanity, President Putin proposed, as you know, to hold a summit of permanent members of the Security Council,” Lavrov said.

He clarified that due to the pandemic, work in this direction has been delayed, but now the Russian side intends to agree with partners from China, the United States, Great Britain and France on specific issues that should be put on the agenda.

Hashtag in support of the UN Charter

Among other things, Lavrov, during his speech, suggested introducing a hashtag in support of the UN Charter.

Thus, he proposed to approve the designation #OurRules of the UN Charter, as well as all its translations into the official languages of the international organization.

“We are all in the same boat.

It is in our common interest to keep it firmly on the waves of world politics, ”he said.

According to him, the organization includes different countries, but this should not "prevent us from working for the benefit of our peoples and all of humanity."

“This is the only way we can fulfill the high mission of the United Nations Organization - to save the current generation from wars, disease and hunger, to build a more peaceful, stable and democratic future for all,” he said.
