In Norway, Denmark, Finland and most European countries, there is the opportunity for police officers to deepen their knowledge through academic further education at the advanced level.

This type of education has so far been lacking in Sweden.

- Why it is, I have a hard time answering, but there is no political agreement to make police training an academic education, says Monica Burman, professor at the unit for police training at Umeå University.

Umeå University has now decided to offer a one-year master's program in police work from the autumn of 2022.

Addresses different target groups

The training will have 25 places and in the first instance it will be professional police officers and civilian employees within the police who will be able to apply.

Students will learn more about, among other things, stress and communication.

It also focuses on awareness of gender, ethnicity and sexuality in relevance to the police's organization and work.

- We will turn to many different target groups.

Police work is not something that only the police do.

There are many types of employment within the police that require more than police training in the background, says Monica Burman.
