24 September 2021 Italy's second gold medal at the World Cycling Championships in Belgium: after Ganna's victory in the time trial, Filippo Baroncini's triumph in the under 23 road race. The 21-year-old from Romagna from Massa Lombarda, in the province of Ravenna, he only arrived at the finish line in Leuven. The blue preceded the Eritrean athlete Biniam Ghirmay and the Dutch Olav Kooij at the finish. As for the other Azzurri, Michele Gazzoli finished fourth and Filippo Zana seventh.



The victory came after a fantastic solo action in the last 6 kilometers and after a crash, in the middle of the race, caused by the American Quinn. 



“It was a stressful race but it ended perfectly, for me and for the team.

This victory was the dream of my life.

I had foreseen the attack at that point and in the end everything went as planned.

I am moved ", commented the winner. And then:" When I was on the run in those last kilometers I said to myself 'Go go, go win this race'.

And I did it ”.
