If, until now, it was difficult to give figures on these expulsions of Haitian migrants, the Haitian National Migration Office issued some details on Thursday.
Some 1,364 migrants, including 404 children, were turned away between September 19 and 22 in Haiti, according to
Alter Presse,
which therefore uses the ONM figures.
In total, twelve flights landed in Haiti, including one in Cap-Haitien, which arrived this Wednesday with 83 people on board.
This Thursday, six other flights were expected. According to
The New York Times
, a total of nearly 2,000 migrants have been deported. The ONM also reports ill-treatment and deplores the lack of resources made available according to its coordinator. According to him, the migrants deported to Port-au-Prince would have denounced mistreatment by the American guards, in particular on board planes. According to some accounts, they were handcuffed, hands and feet, like criminals during their trip.
The ONM, which says it has strengthened its monitoring structure to be able to welcome these migrants, deplores not having received any aid from the Haitian state.
At present, it is the International Office for Migration, the IOM, which pays aid amounting to 10,000 gourdes per migrant, or just over 85 euros.
The ONM therefore calls on the public authorities to release funds and also to provide buses to transport these migrants who will be even more numerous to disembark in the days to come.
United States to send mission to Haiti
In the aftermath of the resignation of the United States' special envoy to Haiti, Daniel Foote, who did not hesitate to criticize the American administration in its management of this file, the Biden administration is trying to play down the situation and announce the imminent arrival of a high-level mission, as announced by
Le Nouvelliste
in its edition of the day. The purpose of this mission will be to "
determine the best way forward here to make sure we speak to civil society so that we hear from the Haitian people themselves to try to understand what needs to be done
", according to the statements. by Wendy Sherman, Assistant Secretary of State of the United States.
A mission scheduled for next week and which will be led by Brian Nicholls, Assistant Secretary for Americas Affairs and Juan Gonzalez, Senior Director of the National Security Council of the United States.
To the question: Will Daniel Foote be replaced?
Wendy Sherman kicks in touch.
Daniel Foote was appointed following the assassination of Jovenel Moïse.
Today, the United States can rely on its ambassador, explains the official, who says she has great confidence in her.
Biden administration responds to Daniel Foote
Daniel Foote, who was very critical in his resignation letter on US migration policy, reportedly pleaded for sending the US military to Haiti. This is what Wendy Sherman would have said according to the
Colorado Spring Gazette
. Daniel Foote would have called for this deployment of the army in order to secure the country. "
A very bad idea,
" according to the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States.
The Biden administration decided to counter-attack after criticism from Daniel Foote, who he said was guilty of not listening and even ignoring his recommendations.
"
Special Envoy Foote has had ample opportunity to voice his concerns about migration ... He has never done it once,
" White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said yesterday.
The Biden administration is trying to defuse the crisis engendered by the resignation of Daniel Foote, while trying to explain its migration policy and deportations.
The reaction of the Haitian press after the resignation of Daniel Foote
"
By testifying so acutely in his letter of resignation, Daniel Foote has just written one of the most virulent pages in the counter-history of relations between Haiti and the United States of America,
" said
Le National
in his editorial of the day. “
A kick from Foote in the anthill to express what we all know: the foreigner insidiously imposes his four wills even in the results of the elections in Haiti.
"
For
Le Nouvelliste
, this resignation is a personal failure of Daniel Foote, and above all it “
underlines the failure of all American policies in Haiti for years
”. “
Since the 2010 earthquake, so as not to go back to the flood, the American choices for Haiti have been catastrophic. Haiti's choices for itself are no less
", estimates the daily, for whom"
the migrant crisis dates from 2010
". “
Hardworking ants, Haitians are more and more numerous in Latin America every year.
"
And the daily wonders: "
How the American strategists could not have guessed that the ants would one day come knocking on their doors stuck that they are between a native country where it is more and more difficult to return and countries host who are experiencing economic setbacks.
"For
Le Nouvelliste
, the consequences of such a strategy are obvious:" To
weaken and allow Haiti to perish is to attract its sons, gentlemen and ladies of America.
