From October 1st, customers can only shop at Frankfurt weekly markets with their own basket, rucksack or bag.

Plastic bags are banned from this day.

The aim of this is to reduce plastic consumption on the weekly markets to the lowest possible level, according to the municipal market operators.

There is one exception, however: the 15-micrometer-thin so-called shirt bags should continue to be allowed if they are required for hygienic reasons.

However, all types of disposable bags, including disposable bio-plastic bags, may no longer be used.

Microplastics in bodies of water

"The consumption of plastic bags has fallen sharply in recent years and has to be reduced further, since plastic is difficult to recycle, accumulates worldwide and, as microplastic, is harmful to human and animal health", said the city.

In sales, plastic bags are often the most cost-effective method of portioning goods and handing them over to the customer.

However, there are alternatives.

Over the past few weeks, the Frankfurt market operators have been informing the weekly market traders about the various options such as reusable containers or deposit systems that can replace plastic bags.

Which variant you choose is up to you and depends not least on their range and the specific hygiene requirements.

When converting to alternative packaging and carrying aids, the market feeders are dependent on customer acceptance.

They too would have to change their habits.
