Carles Puigdemont was arrested Thursday evening on his arrival in Sardinia.
The latter is still being pursued by Madrid for his role in the secession attempt in 2017. This arrest angered the Catalan separatists in Spain.

The reactions were not long in coming, here in Catalonia, despite the late hour, Thursday evening, shortly before 11 p.m., when we learned of this arrest of Carles Puigdemont.
The separatists, surprised and indignant, called for demonstrations this Friday morning, in front of the Italian consulate in Barcelona, which has since been protected by the Catalan police.
It has been five hours now that a few hundred independentists have gathered peacefully.
They demand the release of the ex-Catalan president, since according to them - according to the legal team of Puigdemont, this arrest is illegal, because they believe that the European arrest warrant is suspended by European justice.

Pending the judge's decision
A new legal imbroglio has now been launched and everyone is now waiting to know what will be the decision of the Italian judge, who is due to hear Puigdemont in the next few minutes.
The Catalan's lawyer says he is confident and is betting on immediate release, but the magistrate could decide to continue the extradition process in Spain.
This decision, in any case, could take days or even weeks.
And already, here, new independence demonstrations are planned this evening and this weekend in Barcelona.
