“We are closely following the development of the situation in Sudan.

We took with deep concern the reports of an attempted military coup undertaken in Khartoum on the night of September 20-21, ”Zakharova said.

She said that according to "incoming information, the organizers of the conspiracy have been arrested, at the moment the situation in the Sudanese capital remains calm."

“In this regard, we reaffirm our support for the efforts of the Supreme (Sovereign) Council, as well as the current civilian government of Sudan, to strengthen peace and stability in the republic.

We call on all the political forces of this country to resolve the existing contradictions by peaceful means on the basis of a broad national dialogue and to refrain from action that could lead to an escalation of tensions in Sudanese society.

We hope that our friendly Sudan will successfully overcome the difficulties associated with the current transitional stage of its development, ”the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

Zakharova added that "the Russian embassy in Khartoum is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Russian citizens in Sudan."

Earlier it was reported that on September 21, the Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Sudan Mohammed Abdullah held the ninth meeting of the Russian-Sudan high-level working committee.
