In a letter dated Wednesday, September 22, the American envoy to Haiti Daniel Foote resigned from his post which he had only occupied since July, to denounce the "inhuman" expulsions by the United States of thousands of Haitian migrants, while the country is plagued by growing insecurity from armed gangs.

"I will not join in the inhuman and counterproductive decision of the United States to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti, a country where our officials are confined in secure complexes due to the danger posed by armed gangs controlling daily life, "asserts Daniel Foote in his letter of resignation to Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The US government is struggling to deal with a sudden and massive influx of thousands of migrants, including many Haitians, who are trying to cross the Rio Grande and massed under a bridge last week in the small border town of Del Rio, Texas.

Expulsion of thousands of migrants

The American authorities have started to send them back by plane to their country, a decision much criticized because these migrants flee their country plunged in a political, security and humanitarian crisis.

US Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas said on Wednesday that photos showing border police officers pushing Haitian migrants on horseback across the US-Mexico border did not reflect the identity of the United States, nor the action of all of this force.

These pictures, which have been around the world, have caused a stir in the United States.

Alejandro Mayorkas recalled having ordered the opening of an investigation and promised rapid results, "within days and not weeks".

Thousands of migrants continued to cross the Rio Grande in Del Rio, Texas on Wednesday to seek asylum in the United States.

And the flow is not about to stop.

For weeks, thousands of migrants trying to reach the United States via Central America have been stranded on the northern coast of Colombia, awaiting their passage to Panama.

There are nearly 19,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, we learned Wednesday from an official source.
