A truck with a trailer overturned on the E18 in Västerås just before 00.30.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, according to police.
The E18 has been closed in a westerly direction during the salvage work, which is expected to continue until the morning.
Traffic is diverted until the work is completed, the Swedish Transport Administration states.
