The beginning of the course at the Miguel de Unamuno center had a bittersweet taste.

The enthusiasm for going back to school and the joy for the reunion with the new classmates and teachers has been clouded

by the arrival of the riders

and the bad fumes to the Delicias neighborhood, in Arganzuela.

The ghost kitchens that face the schoolyard have just started up,

although still at half gas

, since they only accept a small number of orders per day.

«I have cried of helplessness.

The week my kids started school, they had the housewarming party.

Looks like a joke.

We appeal

to consumers not to place orders in this kitchen

on Alejandro Ferrant Street and to firms not to establish themselves in this business, which is going to harm the 900 school children ", declares Noelia Cabezas, a neighbor and mother of two school kids.

In the face of numerous neighborhood protests, the City Council tightened the requirements and

changed the regulations

for these establishments last August.

Currently, the premises cannot exceed 350 square meters and the collection and delivery of orders must be carried out inside the buildings.

However, this reform is

not retroactive

and, therefore, does not affect ghost kitchens that were already licensed.

In this case, the company is Cokukin, which has removed one of the four huge fireplaces, with what are now only three because the number of kitchens has decreased and claims that it

has introduced all the

necessary

reforms

to please the neighbors.

Lucas Cornejo, founder of Cokukin, maintains that the company is licensed and ready to operate and that it has

a space for delivery people

within the facilities.

Judicial battle

The only recourse left to residents is the judicial one and, for this reason, they have filed

a contentious-administrative appeal against the Town Hall

.

“Piece-rate food production will put the health of students and the neighborhood at risk due to increased traffic, noise and pollution in an area that should be safe for children and residents and

not turn the city center into an industrial estate

», Argues the affected platform in a statement.

In a similar situation are

the residents of the Paseo Imperial

, in the district of Arganzuela, who are also fighting against the installation of two other ghost kitchens at numbers 6 and 8 of the street.

Residents do not understand that a

license was granted to one of them at full speed

, just fifteen days before the change in regulations was approved.

«There are many irregularities and

the City Council does nothing

.

We have asked for an inspection for a long time, but no one comes to check the work they are doing.

They are touching the structures of the building without having the permission of the community of neighbors ”, complains Jose, one of the victims.

These kitchens are located

in an industrial use zone

with secondary, residential and tertiary activity.

Over time, once industrial buildings were converted into office and residential blocks.

The residents

now stand guard in shifts

to prevent the chimneys from being placed in one of the kitchens and, last weekend, they succeeded after demanding the intervention of the Police.
