The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, assured this Thursday that she will regulate the conscientious objection of doctors to abortion, despite the fact that the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, ruled it out the day before.

The head of Health specified this Wednesday that the Government's objective is to "reconcile and respect" all rights, while emphasizing the "inescapable commitment" of the Executive with the reform of the abortion law.

Everything, he said, moving towards "good practice."

For this reason, he denied that the conscientious objection of doctors was going to "regulate", as was also done with the euthanasia law.

"Of course it is necessary to regulate conscientious objection", Montero responded this Thursday, who, although he has considered that it is necessary to "understand and respect" that there are medical professionals who refuse to carry out "certain practices", has asked that keep "a record and control".

Conscientious objection "cannot be an obstacle," he said.

This will be one of the keys to the reform of the law on sexual and reproductive health and the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in which the Executive is working and whose draft, as announced by the Minister of Equality in an interview with the chain Ser , is expected to be ready in three months, before the end of the year.

"A stigma"

An "urgent" modification, in the eyes of Montero, since in Spain "there is a recognized" right "that cannot be made effective for thousands of women, with the enormous pain that it entails, something that is, he said," a violation of human rights recognized by all international organizations ".

"It is necessary to protect" with the reform of this law women who wish to have an abortion, Montero has specified, because conscientious objection, although there are "very few" cases of real objectors, has become a "practice to prevent the effective access "to voluntary termination of pregnancy.

Thus, abortion is seen as a "stigma", defined Montero, in public hospitals, something that pushes more and more medical professionals to avoid this practice. "There is enormous difficulty in accessing training on voluntary interruption of pregnancy at all stages that have to do with medical practice," said the Minister of Equality after hearing the testimony of medical professionals on this matter. "I do not know if you can speak of repression, but, of course, the stigma exists," he had an impact.

"The State has two obligations," explained Montero, in line with what was stated a day ago by Darias: "One is to guarantee the right of health professionals to conscientious objection, and the other is that all recognized health rights can be attended and guaranteed in public centers ".
