Algeria's Security Council decided on Wednesday to close the country's airspace to Moroccan aircraft.

According to the Algerian president, this applies to all aircraft that have a Moroccan registration number, reports Reuters.

According to a statement from the Security Council, the decision must be seen against the background "of continued provocations and hostile behavior on the part of the Moroccans".

Deadly ground fires ended diplomatic relations

Algeria severed all diplomatic ties with Morocco on August 24 this year, while accusing the North African neighbor of "hostile acts".

This was a fatal land fire that Algeria accused Morocco of causing.

Tens of thousands of hectares of land burned and at least 90 people died in the fires.

Morocco denies the allegations, saying they were based on "false and absurd allegations."

Strained relationship for decades

But the countries have had a strained relationship for decades - the approximately 1,500-kilometer-long border between the countries has been largely closed since 1994.

The governments accuse each other of supporting opposition movements in their respective countries, with Morocco outraged by Algeria's policies around the disputed Western Sahara - which Morocco is occupying - while the Algerian government is outraged by its neighbor's involvement in domestic disputes.
