September 22, 2021 United States President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron will meet in Europe in October, the White House said following a telephone conversation between the two leaders.

The French ambassador to Washington will return next week "to begin intense work with senior US officials," the White House said. The announcement of the defense pact between the US, Great Britain and Australia would have benefited from "open consultations between allies", reads a joint statement after the phone call between the US and French presidents.

The interview comes after days of tension linked to the Aukus pact on submarines in Australia and was announced by the Paris government spokesman, Gabriel Attal, According to the Elysée, the conversation took place at Biden's request.

Macron, according to official sources, was expecting 'clarifications and clear commitments' from Biden, noting that the purpose of the call was to discuss the 'crisis of confidence' that led to the recall of the French ambassador to the United States last week.

France intended to have 'clarification on the American choice to keep a European ally away from key exchanges on cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region', states a note from the Elysée.
