After conquering Afghanistan, the militant Islamist Taliban want to speak at the general debate at the UN General Assembly.

As a UN spokesman announced on Tuesday, the United Nations received a corresponding letter from Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki the day before.

It says that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was deposed on August 15 and is no longer recognized abroad as the country's head of state.

The mission of the previous Afghan ambassador to the United Nations has also ended.

Mohammad Suhail Schaheen had been nominated as the new ambassador of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”.

The claim is being checked

It is still unclear who will give the speech for Afghanistan at the general debate.

The UN Secretariat forwarded the letter to a competent committee for review.

The Islamists had regained power in the country in mid-August amid the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

They then formed a transitional government.

The general debate of the UN General Assembly began on Tuesday. Around a hundred heads of state and government and numerous foreign ministers take part in the one-week high-level diplomatic meeting.
