The Riksdag has voted through amendments to the Environmental Code which mean that the government has the right to do what it deems necessary to achieve two EU directives on reducing the litter of disposable plastic products and waste.
Previously, it has been a criminal offense with a fine of SEK 800 to throw food packaging and glass bottles on the ground.
But now the exemption for small rubbish will be removed starting 1 January 2022.
