22 September 2021 "Health is a global public good and we must preserve it everywhere". This was stated by Prime Minister Mario Draghi, speaking from Palazzo Chigi at the 'Global Covid-19 Summit: Ending the Pandemic and Building Back Better Health Security to Prepare for the next', promoted by American President Joe Biden in the context of the high level of the UN General Assembly.

"Italy - said Draghi - will donate 45 million vaccines by 2021. Efforts are needed for global vaccination", added the Italian prime minister.

"International cooperation is essential to stop the pandemic and prevent future emergencies", Mario Draghi said. "We have made - he added - great progress: 2.5 billion people in the world are fully vaccinated and one billion people are partially vaccinated" but "there are still great inequalities" in the distribution of vaccines and on this "we must be ready to be more generous ".

"We must increase our preparedness for the pandemics of the future. We must increase the production capacity of vaccines and health tools around the world, especially in the most vulnerable countries. We support the European Union's plan to donate one billion euros. to develop manufacturing capacity in Africa and promote technology transfer. We also welcome the US-EU agenda to foster our common efforts for global vaccination. " This was stated by Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Biden: US will double vaccine donation

The United States will double the doses of Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19 to be donated to poor countries, bringing them to over a billion, with the aim of vaccinating 70% of the world's inhabitants within a year. The announcement was made by President Joe Biden at the virtual vaccine summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The inequality in access to vaccines is enormous between economically rich and poor nations: the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, spoke of "obscenity" to the UN Assembly.

The 500 million additional doses will be accompanied by more than $ 300 million to administer, Biden said. So far, at least 160 million US-supplied doses have been distributed in more than 100 countries, more than the rest of the world combined. However, the latest purchase represents a fraction of what will be needed to vaccinate that 70% of the world (and 70% of every nation) by the next UN assembly in September 2022. Washington has been heavily criticized for its approach to vaccines. , described as too modest, especially due to the willingness to provide booster doses to Americans before vulnerable people in poor nations receive the first dose.

About 6 million doses of the vaccine have been administered worldwide in the past year, reaching 43% of the global population. But while some rich countries have very high data (in the US 55% are fully immunized), other poor countries are stuck at rates of 2-3%. And the World Health Organization (WHO) has calculated that just 15% of the donations promised by rich countries have been delivered. The UN agency asked donors to implement their commitments "immediately".

Meanwhile, the WHO has made it known that global infections fell again last week (3.6 million compared to 4 million the previous week), in the first substantial decline in over two months.

Deaths also decrease, -7%.

The Delta variant, on the other hand, is "present in every part of the world", detected in 185 countries.
