The new submarine partnership between Australia, the United States and Great Britain does not change much in terms of the strategic location in Asia.

The three Anglo-Saxon countries were military allies before, and China’s fleet is now the largest in the world.

It will be years, maybe decades, before Australia receives nuclear powered submarines.

Only if the country leases boats from the AUKUS partners in the meantime could it strengthen its naval forces more quickly.

Unfortunately, the agreement has greater consequences for the Atlantic alliance than in the distant Indo-Pacific.

It's not just about French sensitivities.

As before with the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden acted without a vote, he literally outperformed a European partner.

The sobering thing is that it happened in the field of maritime security, where Americans and (EU) Europeans actually have the same interests.

It looks a little different with China trade.

But it doesn't help, you should write off the matter as a lesson in realpolitik. The fact that someone is not Trump does not make him a multilateralist in the European style (and certainly not in the German one). Macron is now looking for an alliance with India. This is the right way. The EU must continue to protect its interests in Asia, India is more important than Australia in any case.
