Eight corpses of migrants from Algeria or Morocco, including that of a child, have been found on beaches in the province of Almería (Andalusia), in southern Spain, since Sunday, authorities said. local, this Tuesday.

"A total of eight corpses were located between the towns of Carboneras and Vera, corresponding to one or more boats," said the sub-prefecture of Almería.

One of the bodies is that of a child and two others are those of women, the Andalusia region emergency service said in a statement.

These bodies "are in the process of being identified," said a spokesperson for the Almería Civil Guard.

Nearly 240 dead in the western Mediterranean

Migrants from Algeria or Morocco, who sometimes come from other African countries, are more and more numerous trying to cross the western Mediterranean to reach Spain.

In total, 10,701 migrants arrived on the coasts of southern Spain, as well as in the Balearics, between January 1 and September 14, i.e. 1,680 more than over the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.

According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 238 migrants have lost their lives in the western Mediterranean since the start of the year.

The main sea route for African migrants trying to reach Spain, however, remains that of the Canaries, an archipelago located off the Atlantic coast of Morocco.
