He emphasized that the United States was entering a period of relentless diplomacy following the events in Afghanistan.

Biden also said that the United States should avoid military action if it is not "clear and achievable".

Significantly increased support

Biden stated that the United States has no ally that is closer, or is more reliable than Australia.

The statement should be seen in the light of the high-profile submarine agreement between the countries, which has given rise to a diplomatic crisis with France and the EU on the one hand and the United States and Australia on the other.

He also announced that the United States is sharply increasing its support for covid-19 work and for international climate and environmental initiatives.

Löfven comments

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) commented on the president's speech.

- Biden is fully aware of the importance of international cooperation.

I have met Biden four times when he was vice president and I feel confident that he has that insight and wants to build relationships.

- He was clear about that in his speech today as well, adds Löfven who is in New York.

Guterres first out

But first out when the General Assembly officially convened on Tuesday morning local time was UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The UN base warned of an increasingly divided world and called for dialogue between the great powers the United States and China.

- To restore trust and inspire hope, we need cooperation.

We need dialogue.

We need understanding, Guterres said.

The General Assembly convenes for its 76th session, with many of the world's heads of state and government in New York.

Due to the corona pandemic, however, several leaders choose to send pre-recorded speeches to the General Assembly.

Prime Minister Löfven will speak in the General Assembly on Friday.
