It was a private person who found the beach crabs in a courtyard in Örebro last week.

At least one of the crabs was alive then.

The County Administrative Board was contacted and the nature conservation officer David Kvarnsudde has been out at the site.

- We were out yesterday and collected three pieces.

It's like someone just released them, there is no water nearby and they can not land.

When we came out, everyone had died.

The beach crab lives along the coast and is classified as viable, but it is red-listed as the population decreases, which means that the species is endangered in the long term.

Investigating if it is criminal

The County Administrative Board has frozen the dead crabs and since the nature conservation officers in Örebro County have no major experience of beach crabs, they contacted the Natural History Museum to confirm that it was precisely beach crabs that had been found.

The idea was that the crabs would be sent to Naturhistoriska to confirm which species it was.

But Naturhistoriska looked directly at the pictures what it was all about.

David Kvarnsudde has also contacted lawyers to find out how to proceed with the case.

- This is new to us and needs to find out how we proceed, if something illegal has happened that is to be investigated or if we are to close the case.

How the crabs got from the coast to Örebro, the county administrative board has not yet received any clarity.

- Maybe someone has fished crabs and taken with them from a holiday, but you can only speculate, says David Kvarnsudde.
