19 September 2021 Workplace deaths hit a record 2 million a year.

A record listed on mourning found, given after data, in the WHO report, in collaboration with the international labor organization, which analyzed events related to occupational diseases or accidents.

What do you die of

According to a study, carried out by the two United Nations agencies in anticipation of the 21st World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, which will be held virtually from tomorrow to 23 September, most of the deaths, that is 81%, are caused by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases; 19% from workplace accidents. "It is shocking that so many people are literally killed by their jobs," commented Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General. "Our report is a wake-up call for countries and businesses to improve and protect health and worker safety, honoring their commitments to provide universal coverage of occupational safety and health services ", he added.

Analyzed 16 years and 19 risk factors

The study examined 19 occupational risk factors over a 16-year period, including workplace exposure to air pollution, carcinogens, ergonomic risk factors and noise. The main risk, the report stresses, is due to the excessive hours of work where one is subjected to the noise that causes about 750,000 deaths a year. Exposure to air pollution, such as gas and smoke particles, in the workplace is the cause of 450,000 deaths. Finally, the research underlines '' the catastrophic effect that work-related traumas and diseases cause on household incomes '', but also on the health systems and productivity of the country.
