The death threat on a banner at the “We are all LinX” demonstration in Leipzig is said to have consequences.

The police made video recordings, said state police chief Horst Kretzschmar on Sunday.

"We will do everything we can to convict the offenders by evaluating the videos." During the demo, the police did not withdraw the banner because there was a threat of escalation.

A black block inside the demonstration had carried a banner with a threat against the head of the Police Terrorism and Extremism Defense Center (PTAZ). "Soon it will be out of your dream, then you will be lying in the trunk" read the fabric banner behind the name of the PTAZ boss. This was interpreted as an allusion to the RAF murder of employer president Hanns-Martin Schleyer. He was found shot dead in the trunk of a car in 1977.

Green leader Robert Habeck has also sharply condemned the threats.

"Death threats, in this case against the head of the special commission, are disgusting," Habeck told the German press agency on Sunday.

“Just as calls for murder on posters from the right are unacceptable, death threats against police officers cannot simply be accepted.

This is not a game.

Violence and threats of violence are in no way acceptable. "

Bottles and firecrackers flew

"It is noteworthy that, to the best of our knowledge, the police acted so prudently and de-escalated," said Habeck.

"They deserve my respect for that."

At the largest radical left demonstration in Leipzig for years, riots broke out on Saturday.

During the lift from the city center to the south of Leipzig, stones were pelted at several bank buildings.

Bottles and firecrackers flew against the facade of the Leipzig Police Department.

After the official end, hooded men lit a large barricade and another fire in the street in the Connewitz district.

Several thousand people took part in the demo with the motto “We are all LinX”.

It had been mobilized nationwide.
