Schools for students between the ages of 13 and 18 in Afghanistan have been closed since the Taliban seized power, but reopened on Saturday.

A statement from the Ministry of Education states that: "All male teachers and students must participate in the educations".

Female teachers and girls are not mentioned.

Goes against previous promises

Schools for lower grades have already opened in the country, where both girls and boys have returned as well as some female teachers, reports AFP.

Spokesmen for the Taliban have said they do not intend to take the country back to the laws that prevailed under the group's extremely harsh rule in the 1990s, when girls were expelled from schools.

Girls should be allowed to study, as long as they are kept separate from boys, according to previous statements.

Unicef: Deeply troubled

The UN children's rights organization Unicef is now expressing strong concern about the future of women's education in Afghanistan.

"We are deeply concerned that many girls may not be allowed to return now," the organization said in a statement.
