The survey covers 26,000 candidates in this year's church election.

Expressen can show that a number of the candidates, it is unclear how many, have been convicted of crimes.

Most are traffic offenses, but several have also been convicted of violent crimes of various kinds - often aimed at close women.

Several have also been convicted of eco-crimes, mainly accounting crimes.

A candidate has been convicted of aggravated child rape and aggravated child sexual abuse, according to the newspaper.

Caroline Krook, priest and bishop emeritus, comments in Expressen on the information as follows:

- If it is something that happened say ten years ago and that you tried to get your life in order and joined the church, then I mean that it should not persecute them all their lives.

But if it is an ongoing crime, then it is extremely inappropriate.

The church election will be held on Sunday 19 September.

Everyone over the age of 16 and registered in Sweden has the right to vote.
