The Lithuanian delegation to the EU Council called on the European Commission to resume dialogue with Russian colleagues on the management of the Baltic Sea reserves.

According to Lithuanian politicians, Russia sets high quotas for the permissible fish catch.

"The Russian side carries out targeted fishing for Baltic cod and unilaterally sets significantly higher scientific recommendations and its historical share of the quota of the total allowable catch of herring and sprat," the document says.

At the same time, the commentary emphasizes that all EU countries are making great efforts to preserve and sustainably use the resources of the Baltic Sea.

As the head of the Fisheries Information Agency Alexander Savelyev explained to RT, Russia complies with all agreements related to fishing with its European counterparts.

The existing international commissions, including those in the Baltic Sea, work efficiently and determine the volume of fishing.

“Lithuania has insignificant waters of its own, and they, of course, have big problems with fishing, which they are trying in every possible way to shift to the Russian side,” he commented on the statement of the Lithuanian delegation.

Savelyev also recalled that in 2015 the Rosselkhoznadzor imposed restrictions on the supply of fish products to Russia from the Baltic countries due to a number of violations.
