- Directly in the field, I suspected that it could be apple tagging, Sarcodontia crocea.

A species that has been looked at in the literature and read about, but which felt completely unthinkable to find, says nature conservation officer Dennis Nyström in a press release from the county administrative board on Gotland.

The fungus is extremely rare and has previously only been found in three places in Sweden - Öland, Blekinge and on Gotland.

The latest find was made in 2016 in Blekinge.

In 1902 it was last seen on Gotland.

- The species is probably overlooked as in Sweden it is only found on older apple trees that usually grow in private villa gardens, park environments and in wasteland and may thus have passed mycologists, says Dennis Nyström.

The apple tagging is red-listed as acutely threatened on the Swedish red list.
