Around one in six women has symptoms of PMS - that is, mood swings and other physical problems in the days before menstruation.

Approximately one in twenty women suffers from the more severe variant PMDS, which can be experienced as a moderate to severe depression.

The difference is that the problems stop when menstruation comes.

Describes suicidal thoughts

A large proportion of those who have PMDS have such severe depression the week before menstruation that they have suicidal thoughts.

This is shown by a new study that Inger Sundström Poromaa, professor of gynecology, worked on.

- What we see in that study is that 60 percent of those with PMDS have such severe problems that we would call it a moderate to severe depression.

It is also 40 percent of those who participate in our study who describe suicidal thoughts, she says.

"Has influenced my view of myself"

Influencer and presenter Hanna Persson has lived with problems since she was 14 years old.

- Now that I have made this documentary, I have understood that it has affected quite a lot.

It has affected relationships and my view of myself, she says in SVT's Morgonstudion.

Ask the professor to explain what you can do yourself to relieve the symptoms of the clip.
