Since the railway line has been closed under the Salzbachtal Bridge, which is in danger of collapsing, hardly a train has left Wiesbaden Central Station. In their emergency, around ten times as many commuters use the train station in the Biebrich district to get to work. According to the city, too many people and too many cars have meant that the traffic situation there is at times confusing. "We want to avoid dangerous situations and get things in order," said Daniel Sidiani, mobility officer at the Wiesbaden traffic department, on Wednesday. Previously, the head of the traffic department, Andreas Kowol (The Greens), had presented so-called emergency measures with which the train station in Wiesbaden's largest district should be made fit.

This is necessary because the small station has been neglected in recent years. “Biebrich has excellent connections to local public transport. You can be in Frankfurt in half an hour, ”said Sidiani,“ but the infrastructure around the train station hasn't grown with it. ”So there are only a few options for parking a car. Therefore, a Park & Ride space is to be created right next to the station building. “This is an overgrown property that belongs to a private investor,” explained Sidiani. An agreement has already been made with the owner. In the next week, the property is to be fenced in and plants are to be cut back. About 25 cars can then be parked there. Tempo 30 is to be introduced in the entire quarter around the station, and the lane markings will also be renewed.

Parked sidewalks and congested streets

But that is not enough.

“Some of the sidewalks were parked in such a way that safety was not guaranteed,” explained the speaker.

Because of the double curve, it is a complicated traffic situation, which is made even more difficult by the "masses of people" who are now using the station.

"We just had to act and create sufficiently wide sidewalks," he said.

The city has created a new entrance from Erich-Ollenhauer-Straße, cut back the plants, and built barrier-free access to platform 1.

Parking spaces for bicycles have also been created there.

Bollards were erected directly in front of the train station so that the entrance was not blocked.

Further redesigns are in preparation.

In addition to the Park & Ride area mentioned, two taxi ranks will be set up on Gibber Strasse.

The buses for the rail replacement service can stop in the square in front of the train station.

Where the Seligmann-Baer-Platz joins the Äppelallee, the aim is to prevent parked cars from endangering pedestrians and hindering traffic.

In the past, according to Sidiani, the second lane that leads to Äppelallee was repeatedly parked.

That led to considerable backlogs up to the level crossing.

“Of course it's uncomfortable when I'm standing on the level crossing in the car and then the barrier closes,” said Sidiani.

Bahn contributes to the costs

At the entrances to platform 2 and on Erich-Ollenhauer-Straße, more bike racks and a bike rental station are to be installed. The city hopes that many commuters will still use the Biebrich station when the main station is open again. "I have heard of people who had to go to the train station, but are now considering sticking to it because it is easy to get to by bike from Dotzheim and Biebrich," he said.

The question does not yet arise, because the main train station remains closed for the time being and it is not clear when it will open again. "We assume and hope that this will be the case in December," said Sidiani. The city does not have to pay the 60,000 euros for upgrading the station alone. "For the accesses from the south, the railway has given us the prospect of a share in the costs."
